Watching Twitch Streams using VLC Media Player

Recommended Posts

Lately I've been using VLC media player in order to watch Livestreams on TwitchTV and, in my experience, there has been considerably less lag/stuttering in doing so. I suspect others will get the same results... because Internet reasons. OMGScoots

Things you will need:

VLC Media Player(Don't know what this is? It's like Windows Media Player.)

Livestreamer This opensource program connects Twitch to VLC - Just scroll down past the change log and click on the Installer

Once both of these files have been downloaded and installed to the default locations specified in the installer (Please do it this way, it gets awkward when you change the instillation directory) you will need to open up command prompt (Start -> Type "cmd") then on this screen you need to type 3 things: livestreamer So for example: livestreamer http://twitch.tv/utorak007 best

As for choosing different quality settings, the options are "best" "high" "medium" "low" But I am able to load "best" quality a lot easier than on TwitchTV so that's why I use VLC.

Any questions, then I can try and answer. Just post below or DM me on Twitch -> Compose Message to BoomLiam

Don't forget to use Twitch POP-OUT chat, seeing as you're not on the browser anymore! Use the link format here: http://www.twitch.tv/CHANNEL_NAME/chat?popout= eg: http://www.twitch.tv/utorak007/chat?popout=

Just a question that popped into my head. How does this work with regards to ads? Does the streamer still get revenue from ads if we watch through VLC player?

Not too sure how it deals with this, seeing as this plays back the streamed video directly and kinda bypasses Twitch's side, you don't get ads, but it may still count as a view on Twitch's side. If you are a supporter of a stream, you could open up a tab, pause the video and ads will still play for you when it is sent through from the streamer to Twitch (Just be sure to mute it otherwise you'll poop your panties)
